The muddiest point

The muddiest point for me was the guessing and checking thing. I don't understand when to use it and I don't fully understand the square thingy. Im pretty good at completing the square. sometimes I make a few silly mistakes but I understand what I do wrong and I fix it. But the guessing and checking thing I just have no idea what im doing wrong or how to fix it/
